Due to some recent reports in the local news regarding potential knife crime we thought it helpful to raise awareness of this with parents and carers as our commitment to safeguarding the well-being of all students extends beyond the classroom. This week's bulletin focuses on the dangers of knife crime, how to spot warning signs, and how to support young people effectively.
What is Knife Crime?
Knife crime involves the possession, use, or threat of knives or other bladed weapons. Unfortunately, young people can be vulnerable to becoming both victims and perpetrators of knife-related incidents. Understanding the risks and addressing concerns early is vital in keeping our children safe.
Signs to Spot
It's important to be aware of the signs that may indicate a young person is at risk of involvement in knife crime. These can include:
• Sudden changes in behavior or mood.
• Withdrawing from family or friends.
• Unexplained money, gifts, or new possessions.
• Carrying items without a clear reason (such as a screwdriver or sharp objects).
• Talking about weapons or feeling unsafe.
• Reluctance to go to certain places or sudden changes in friendship groups.
If you notice any of these signs, it's important to have an open and non-judgmental conversation with your child.
How to Talk to Your Child About Knife Crime
• Start conversations early about staying safe.
• Listen to their concerns and avoid being judgmental.
• Explain the dangers and legal consequences of carrying a knife.
• Reassure them that seeking help is the best way to stay safe.
How to Report Concerns
If you are worried about your child or any other young person in regard to this, please contact our safeguarding team or Crimestoppers: 0800 555 111 (anonymous)
All concerns will be taken seriously and handled with care and confidentiality.
