It’s been a busy two weeks back at College and I’m looking forward to sharing the highlights with you!
Starting with sport, we have had some great individual successes... our talented young diver, Louie M recently competed in the Armada Cup 2025, with divers from all over the UK. Louie came away with Gold in the Platform Diving event and additionally, he earned a Silver Medal in the 3-meter Diving Board event. Louie has now qualified for the National Final Diving Competition in June 25. What a tremendous achievement! Year 7 student, Aneya B, recently took part in her first ever Jujitsu competition and came away with two gold medals, well done Aneya!
Now on to our school and team events… our Year 10 Boys Football team have progressed to the next round of the Devon Cup after a win against QE, Crediton. Similarly, our Year 7 boys have also successfully made it through to the next round of the Devon Cup after a win against Churston Grammar School.
In the Plymouth Football League, our U13 Girls (mainly made up of Year 7s since our Year 8s have been needed in the U14 National cup side), Year 7 Boys, Year 9 Boys and Year 8 Boys have all been in match action since half term – well done teams. And despite a great performance, our Year 7 Boys were knocked out of the Plymouth Football Cup by Plymstock. Congratulations to our Year 9 Rugby Team who represented the school in the West Devon 7s – I know the team had a great time. Well done to all who played in the Junior Ellis Badminton Tournament – thank you to Mr Potter for running our Badminton Club in school – and also to our Cross Country team, with medal runs from Nancy D, Pixie G and Lilly G and our Year 7 Girls won the team event. Wow! That’s a lot of news and excellent performances!
Finally, both our U16 Elite Boys and our U14 Girls had big away matches in the semi- and quarter- finals of the National Cup respectively. Our Elite boys had already achieved so much to get in to the semi-final of this cup. They travelled to London for the semi-final and despite an excellent performance, were knocked out by St Bonaventure’s RC School, Newham. Well done boys, we are super proud of you!
Our U14 Girls Football Team then travelled to their away quarter final in the National Cup. It was a disappointing 2-1 loss for them after a late penalty but a great performance in the Cup nevertheless and they should all be proud of their national successes.
This week, we also celebrated World Book Day in style with special guests, The Queen of Hearts and The Mad Hatter, who came to join us for the day. A huge well done to Lottie in Year 7 for winning our inaugural Creative Writing competition with an excellent poem and to 10SBM for winning our Tutor challenge!
With National Careers week as well, Year 9 made their option choices after taking final advice and guidance at Parents’ Evening. We also had Chloe Brown from Marjon University come to talk to Year 9 about the benefits of going to university and Year 13s had a visit from Babcock. At Eggbuckland, we take careers education really seriously and support all of our students to have high aspirations of university or a meaningful alternative, with so many excellent training schemes and apprenticeships available.
Talking of futures, Year 11 and 13 both received their mock results this week. You will know from my previous posts how proud we were of our students throughout their mock period. Their results certainly reflect the hard work they put in, with significant improvements seen in both Year Groups from the November Mocks. Teachers are now working hard to plan targeted revision lessons based on mock performances. For our students, every minute counts and we encourage all Year 11s and 13s to take full advantage of all of the support on offer over these final weeks until the main event of the summer exam series.
Year 11 have been pleased to learn about our Prom Passport scheme since returning from half-term – students can earn ‘stamps’ over the coming weeks for their on-going efforts with revision, attendance and in lessons, then to be in with the chance of winning a number of excellent prizes aimed to enhance their Prom experience – from free a ticket, to a taxi home, to a pamper room before the Prom, to a personal photographer, just to name a few!
In a similar vein, our Golden Ticket reward scheme is back up and running from Monday, 10th March, with students across all Year Groups being awarded Golden Tickers for going above and beyond in the school community.
Teachers and support staff can issue Golden Tickets for a whole variety of individualised reasons. Students can then pop their Golden Ticket ‘raffle ticket’ into the Prize Draw they are most interested in, choosing from a variety of rewards, in time for the big prize draws at the end of term!
We are working hard to improve our facilities across the College and will soon be able to showcase upgrades in a few more classrooms. If any local businesses are able to offer any support in helping us upgrade our facilities more quickly, through equipment, people-power, or decorating supplies, we would love to hear from you via our mailbox, mailbox@eggbuckland.com.
Finally, a big well done to our Students of Week for the past two weeks:
Year 7: Tommy E, Aneya B
Year 8: Miley M, Steven M
Year 9: Olivia G, Alfie T
Year 10: Louie M, Matthew J
Year 11: Matthew T, Joshua P, Karl L
Sixth Form: Chloe S, Micah S
And to our Sparx winning Tutor Groups: 10CVN, 9MHW, 8GOC, 7RAS followed the following week by 10CVN and 9MHW (again!), 8MEJ and in Year 7, RAS, HMG and SJW were all tied. Well done!
